Our Work at the Jane Goodall Institute

The Jane Goodall Institute USA’s conservation and youth engagement work spans four African countries and the US, with a variety of science-driven, technology-enabled programs inspired by our founder, Dr. Jane Goodall’s, vision and legacy. Our programs are grounded in the following key priorities designed to beneficially impact animals, people, and the planet.

Scientific Research & Innovation

Jane’s groundbreaking research began in the 1960’s and continues today as the longest running wild chimpanzee study in the world.

Animal Welfare

Jane’s animal welfare legacy is carried out through JGI's best-in-class animal sanctuary, thought leadership, and animal rights advocacy.

Community-Led Conservation

In 1994, Jane launched Tacare, JGI’s signature approach to conservation that puts local communities at the forefront of change.

Activating Hope & Youth Action

Millions of people are making a difference through Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots, a youth action program active in 75 countries and counting.

Forest Restoration

JGI is reconnecting habitats and advancing nature-based solutions that strengthen ecosystems and community resilience.

Dr. Jane Goodall's vision for a brighter future guides each of our programs, which address specific conservation issues — from the illegal wildlife trade to habitat loss to one of Jane's greatest concerns, apathy — with solutions relevant to the countries in which our teams work.
